Are YOU Armed and Ready?

October 4, 2012

Staying with the topic of demons, fallen angels, and aliens, I want you to ask yourself this question.  Are you fully prepared for spiritual warfare?  Do you have what it takes to fight against principalities and the darkness that surrounds this world?  Do you believe a gun and ammo is all that you need to protect you and your loved ones, friends, neighbors, or co-workers?  Do not be fooled!  A gun will get you results when dealing with an intruder.  My husband and I have contemplated buying a gun recently, for that very purpose…things are getting pretty scary out there!

But a gun will not do you a bit of good when it comes to dealing with and fighting against evil spirits that are fully under the command of Satan!!  You need some serious armor!  God has given us such armor and reminds us in Ephesians 6:10-18, what these pieces are called and what their purposes are!

Don't leave home without it!

We are instructed to wear the belt of truth, as well as the breastplate of righteousness, and hold tight to the shield of faith, and the sword of righteousness.  We protect our minds with the helmet of salvation and are told to wear shoes of peace.  These pieces of fine armor are ours for the taking and will give us strength, courage, wisdom, peace as well as holiness!  This armor will serve you all the days of your life and will protect you and keep you safe.  Better than a gun or a knife, these will last a lifetime and do not require extra ammo or cleaning.  Reliable, trustworthy, gifts from our Lord and Savior, the armor of God helps you win the battles again evil!  Thank you Lord, for providing us such protection and tools with which to fight these battles that sneak up on our peace!

So, what are these pieces, the sword, the shield, the breast plate, the belt, helmet and shoes for?  How do they work?  What makes them special?  Well, let me take these instruments/weapons/gear one piece at a time.

I will start with the belt of truth, for that is the first piece of armor mentioned in Ephesians 6, verse 14.  Today truth seems to be accepted on certain terms.  People say truth is not a fact, but a perception.  I absolutely disagree with this.  Truth is solid, and unshakable, but man, oh man, has Satan begun influencing people to believe otherwise.  This is why ‘girding your loins’ with the belt of truth is so important today.  It will keep you from falling for the lies of this world, the lies Satan loves issuing!  When you belt yourself with truth, God will give you discernment and wisdom to see through the lies and remain on His solid rock!  His laws have not changed, the world has changed them.  But His law still remains the same today as the day He carved them into the tablets and gave them to Moses!

Next, still in verse 14, we are instructed to put on the breastplate of righteousness!  Not only is this armor secured in place to protect our hearts, but to remind us of God’s commandments, the rules of the righteous!  It’s rather easy today to feel pangs of jealousy and to wish we had what others had, or could do what others do.  Facebook is the perfect example of why this is so easy.  You see your friends with new homes, new cars, or on fine dining ventures or dreamy vacations and then you look at your pocket book and realize, this is not an option for me.  God’s commandments have not changed, but the way the world looks at them has.  When you have on the breastplate of righteousness, you cannot be easily fooled and your heart is protected from such sinful desires.

In verse 15, we are told to put on the shoes of peace.  These shoes give us the power to walk anywhere, unafraid to share the good news and God’s love with others!  Better than Nike, these shoes don’t say, “Just Do It,” but give us the ability to do it and do it righteously!   These shoes will take you far and protect your every step.  They offer confidence and keep you on the narrow path.  I love shoes!  But these shoes love me!  No other shoe can offer you so much peace, confidence and bravery!

However, the most important piece of armor, the piece you should never be found without is found in verse 16.  This is the shield of faith.  How can you even begin your journey as a follower of Christ, without the shield of faith.  For in faith, you believe.  In faith, you have received the Holy Spirit.  With faith, you follow the Lord’s instructions and you go about doing His will in your life.  Without your shield, you might as well be holding a gun with no bullets!  The shield will protect you from temptation and the will nullify the attempts of the devil!  Nothing he fires in your direction will be able to penetrate this powerful shield!  It IS the hedge of protection that surrounds you, your faith!  How powerful is that?!

Finally, we have to protect our heads!  It carries our brain, our thoughts, our eyes, our mouth, our ears!  So in verse 17 we are instructed to put on the helmet of our salvation and wield our sword of the spirit.

In football, racing, and in war, helmets are a must!  They protect our precious noggins from being destroyed.  They keep us from becoming an incompetent vegetable.  Our minds are as fragile as our skulls…I don’t care how hard-headed your mama told you that you are/were!  We must go to great lengths to protect our minds, especially in this day and age where perversion dances all around us, no matter which way we turn our heads.

Our salvation is found in Christ!  When you accept Christ as Lord and Savior of your life, that’s when the battle really begins.  For you were already Satan’s minion before, and once saved, he rages, fights and starts aiming to get you back under his grips!  Your helmet of salvation will protect your mind from heading towards dark places, as it will remind you of Jesus’ sacrifice and your responsibility to live righteous lives, by obeying God’s commandments.

Don’t think you automatically pull that helmet on, once being saved.  Maybe you didn’t even know you had such an awesome gift from the Lord.  Well, no time like today to pull that helmet over your head!

I had a pastor who once asked my boys if they wanted to see his sword.  I knew exactly what would happen next, but of course, my boys were too young and fully expected him to pull a sword out from within his jacket.  When he pulled out a bible instead, my baby boys seemed a little disappointed and confused!  But the Word of God is our greatest weapon in this battle!  Where as the shield of faith allows us the ability to fight the battle with confidence, the sword of the Holy Spirit equips us with God’s instructions!

A friend of mine bought a used truck.  He opened the glove compartment soon after making the purchase and instead of finding the truck’s instruction manual, he found a Bible.  Inside he found these words written, “The only instruction manual you will ever need.”  He found Christ, while reading that instruction manual!  Hallelujah!

If you ever want to know how God feels about something, look no further than God’s Holy Word.  If you want to know just how much power we have been given, check out the authority given us through Jesus Christ.  We can move mountains, we can heal, we can fight and win against the demons, because God has given us command over them.

I have to laugh when people assume that Christians are a weak bunch, for we are actually quite empowered.  Once we begin to read the word of God and prayerfully apply it to our lives, we really begin to see the results of such Holy Power!

So I ask you again, Are you armed and ready?

I tell you, it’s high time you get yourself fully ready, as the battle is on and the wicked are in the lead at the moment, because God’s people are not fully prepared.  We must rise and help Christ bring about the victory of winning souls, saving them from the fiery pits of hell!  Our duty is not to act in violence, but through patience and love!  How else can we convince others of the greatest Love of All?!

Maybe one day in the future, I will cover each commandment and how they are being erased and not honored today.  We’ll see.

Here is the New Living Translation’s list of the 10 Commandments: (I like this version because it easy for the children to understand)

1.You must not have any other god but me.
2.You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
3.You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
4.Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
5.Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
6.You must not murder.
7.You must not commit adultery.
8.You must not steal.
9.You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
10.You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.
